No Need to Change, John Maxwell

apa_homoIn case you didn't already know, it is now ok to be gay. Therapists and psychologists in America have finally determined, after years of research, that homosexuality is not, in fact, a disease or malfunction of the mind. Years of data collected now show that homosexuality does not need to be changed. Instead, they recommend that the people who have conflicts between their sexuality and their faith should look at changing their faith, church, or just taking a breather from doing things they feel is objectionable. No more should we be ashamed of ourselves (hah!) and instead, maybe the problem isn't ours. Go figure!

Of course, not all of the members of the council for the American Psychological Association that passed the resolution agreed. Lacking unanimity at 125-to-4, apparently some high-ranking psychologists believe that evidence can as yet be faulty. No doubt these same scientists would quote statistical analyses in backing up claims of their own, and have surely done so throughout their entire careers. It raises the question of whether or not data that is claimed to be a true representation of reality can be reliable. Apparently, some psychologists seem to think it's ok to pick and choose what data they want to believe in.

Running across this sort of thing is normal for most minorities, as a prevailing/outspoken group will always quote the worst possible scenario as an example for how the entire group is seen. Religious groups do the same thing, and regularly. Take the battle over equal rights for marriage that is taking place around the world. Most groups will point to bath houses, gay bars and dance clubs as the reason why homosexuals are too flagrant and, according to them, have no sense of propriety. Well, that and the usual "The Bible says it's wrong" - blah, blah, blah. If you look at Genesis even once, you'll see that it says man was made to love Eve, and vice versa, as punishment - not as a gift! But I degress.
